Getting good at making your own pizza dough is a skill well worth the time you put into it. Impress friends with your mad pizza-throwing skills with this video from the California Culinary Academy.

Michael Kalanty, a chef from the California Culinary Academy, put together a snazzy video tutorial on how to toss pizza dough in the air like a pro. He uses sourdough in this lesson, but any stiff pizza dough will do.

To get started, you’ll need a big batch of flour to keep the dough from sticking (be prepared to flour your arms), and a rolling pin to get the initial shape of the pie nice and round. Hit up the video for a play-by-play visual on how to stretch and twirl the dough while keeping it from landing on your head.

Don’t be surprised if you don’t get it right the first fifty times you try dough-tossing. The smarties at science blog Physorg say there’s a lot more to it than just throwing the crust in the air a few times and hoping a pizza drops in your hands. In fact, apparently the physics behind pizza dough-tossing could help researchers develop better technology (who knew?).

If you consider yourself a pizza-flinging ace, let’s hear your best tips in the comments.
